Question: What does Wolf Mountain do?
Answer: Wolf Mountain Products provides a broad range of wood and bark-based soil enhancements, bark mixes, landscape ground cover products, playground chips, compost products, sawdust, wood shavings, among other things. These products are used in varied ways ranging from potting or grow mixes, topdressing products for turf, animal bedding (wood shavings), walk-on bark mixes and ground covers for landscape and shrub areas. We sell bulk, in one yard super-sacks that require a forklift to move and some products in 1.5 or 2 cubic foot bags with minimum orders.
Question: What makes you different from other suppliers?
Answer: Our soil amendment products are based on a large quantity of very old wood and bark, which we purchased a few years ago. This old wood and bark has some unique properties: 1) it is very dry and thus with tests done by outside laboratories has been shown to have high water retention, as high as almost 30%, 2) it has a low pH which is good for soils commonly found in the West in that this neutralizes the salt found in the soils, 3) since it is old it breaks down quickly adding beneficial organic material to soils while not stealing nitrogen from the soil in the process.
Our ground cover products are composed of the finest materials from lumber mills. Whereas other ground cover providers “extend” their products by adding construction waste or destroyed pallets, we do not. Our products are clean and high quality wood and bark products.
Given that we own a large quantity of wood and bark (15+ years worth) we can be counted on for consistent supply and consistency in products.
Question: Do you sell products for gardens, grow boxes and/or flower beds?
Answer: Yes. We have products that are ideal for mixing into the soils to add aeration, water retention, water infiltration and for adding organic material to the soils. We sell soil conditioners or what some call soil softeners. These products are 3/8” or smaller or a 1/8" or smaller, aged wood and bark humus that is mixed into soils to loosen the soils.
Additionally, we offer wood and bark based fertilizer products. These are 1/8” or smaller wood and bark products soaked with liquid fertilizers then dried. You get all the benefits of the fertilizer with additional benefits of the aged wood and bark, namely, water retention, low pH, organic material added to the soils, etc. Our fertilizers for these products are traditional N-P-K fertilizers where the N (nitrogen) used is a slow release nitrogen, thus spoon feeding fertilizer to the plants over a long period of time.
We also offer compost products. See below.
Question: What product should I use in my grass areas?
Answer: We sell products ideal for your grass areas. We have two. One has fertilizer soaked into the wood and bark and the other does not. On the fertilizer enhanced product you get all the benefits of the fertilizer and the aged wood and bark. They both are 1/8” or smaller products, very consistent in size and texture and very dry with high water retention properties.
The benefits these products provide are two fold. First they are exceptionally dry and in independent tests have been shown to have water retention of over 25%. This means that you can water substantially less with the same water benefit. The water retained remains available to the grass or other plant material. Secondly, these products add organic matter to the soil that loosen the soils and increase aeration and water filtration into the root system of the grass creating a healthier plant environment.
These are applied as a topdressing, meaning that you spread these products evenly over grass areas from ¼” to ½” thick a few times a year. Great results have been found by golf courses in northern Utah that you would recognize where these products have been used on fairways and greens. Many other home owners have found great success with these products.
In areas where overseeding is done during winter months in turf areas (St. George, Utah, Las Vegas and the Phoenix area, for instance), these topdressing products are ideal.
Question: Do you sell topsoil or rock?
Answer: No. We don't carry soils, per se. We get many requests for topsoil but after the initial question we find that most of the those looking for topsoil are looking at replacing their soils in their gardens or flower beds. People feel that their soils are "spent" or "used up". Instead of replacing we suggest you improve the soils you already have. We have seen great success with improving soils. You can do this by adding organic material to these soils. We sell high quality soil amendments, old wood and bark, for this purpose. Some add manure to their soils, which is fine and we aren't necessarily negative on manures, but these kind of additions, if used solely, can add significant salts to the soils, which are a natural inhibitant to plant growth; so moderation would be good. We also sell our old wood and bark soil amendments with composted manures (dairy and poultry), if you wish. By using our wood and bark soil amendments, that have a very low pH, and mixing with composted manures like we do, the low pH neutralizes many of the salts that may be present in the composts.
Lastly, we have professional growers that grow plant material directly in our soil conditioners without any soils.
We do not carry sand, gravel or decorative rock at this time.
Question: Do you sell sawdust?
Answer: Yes. We have sawdust that comes directly from a lumber mill. Some have added sawdust to garden boxes as a soil softener. Perhaps better than sawdust are our soil conditioner products as they are aged, have water retention properties and a lower pH than sawdust.
We sell wood shavings that are "planed" at the lumber mill. Some of our customers use these very clean wood shavings as animal bedding.
Question: Do you sell bark?
Answer: We offer bark and bark mix products for ground cover and as soil amendments. Our base product has a good deal of bark inherent. This base product serves as the basis for our soil amendments and many of our ground cover products. Additionally, we also bring newer bark from Montana lumber mills that are available as stand alone and as mix products with others.
For ground covers, we offer: Premium Ground Cover which is a 2.5” minus wood and bark product. Our Walk-On Bark Mix is our Premium Ground Cover product with added additional bark.
Question: Do you sell colored ground cover?
Answer: Yes. We acquire white wood chips (meaning new wood) from lumber mills. We take these wood chips and grind them to a consistent 2.5" or smaller size and color them with environmentally save colorants, made for this purpose, either brown or black. We do not use construction waste or pallets for our colored ground cover, therefore our products are very clean of rock, nails or other items and are consistent in size and texture.
Question: Do you offer compost products?
Answer: Yes. We offer compost products utilizing dairy or poultry manure. These compost products are a mixture of our wood and bark soil amendment products and true manure compost providing the best attributes of both substrates used. Additionally, our soil amendments alone could be considered a compost as many of our customers say, therefore you have your choice.
Question: Do you offer professional grow mixes?
Answer: Yes. We have custom made professional grow mixes for several greenhouse and nurseries. We are working on formulations where these will be available as products and not solely customer blends. Contact us for information and prices.
Question: Where does your wood and bark come from?
Answer: We own over 3 million cubic yards of old wood and bark. It is currently buried in the ground in south central Utah. It is in trenches that range from 20-40 feet wide and 15-25 feet deep and go for several hundred yards in length. We have over 120 of these trenches on our property. Why is it there and who put it there? Several lumber mills in southern Utah some 30 years ago started placing this bark and wood. There was a vibrant economy in lumber in these areas at the time. Prior to the mid-1970’s these wood and bark "overs" was burned. In the mid to late 1970’s these lumber mills were encouraged by the newly formed EPA that burning was no longer a long term option. Several of these mills decided to join together and combine their overs and place them on the land that Wolf Mountain now owns. Before they placed this wood and bark material in the ground the wood was chipped to 4” (inches) or less and “belly dumped” by semi trucks in trenches. When a trench was filled it was covered with 1-4 feet of additional dirt. This process of filling these trenches continued for the next 15-20 years or until the early 1990’s.
Having the wood and bark buried as described, without oxygen available to it, created a unique “de-composing” environment, not traditional “composting” but a “de-composing” where the wood and bark simply “broke down” without getting “hot” like composted product. It is also exceptionally dry. In its current state it has a very low pH, ideal for our high salt soils in the West. As such, it makes a great soil amendment and fcarrier for liquid fertilizers.
In addition to our own source of material, we also acquire new bark and wood chips from various lumber mills in Montana, Idaho, Colorado and Utah for use in several of our products.
Question: How much is 3 million cubic yards?
Answer: As mentioned above, we own approximately 3 million cubic yards of source material. How much is that? At our main plant in Lindon, Utah, we have just over 6 acres of ground. If we were to evenly spread our 3 million cubic yards over this 6 acres it would need to be stacked to over 250 feet high. This is to tell you that we are going to be around for a while and our products will be consistent for you for a long time.
Question: Who do you sell to?
Answer: Primarily we are a wholesale supplier to retail nurseries, landscapers, golf courses, municipalities and the like. For end users, we supply many of Utah's nurseries as this time. As not all our products are carried by the nurseries in close proximity to our bark plant in Lindon we will sell those products not carried by local nurseries to the public. Customers can come and pick up bulk products or with minimum order size requirements we will deliver locally.
For a nursery in your area that carries our products please contact us via email or phone. Our contact information can be found here
Next year (2009) we intend to have regional distribution centers and partners in the Las Vegas and greater Phoenix area.
We currently sell and direct ship products in several western states. If you have interest, please contact us for information.
Question: Can I get samples?
Answer: Yes. If you live near our Lindon, Utah facility you can stop by and get samples of all our products. If you are not close to this facility please contact us and we can arrange to get you samples.
Question: I'm a (fill in this space), can and how do I buy from you?
Answer: If you are a landscape contractor or work for a nursery, school district, golf course, sports fields or any number of other kind of entity, yes we will sell to you and pending approval on a credit application will offer terms. We also offer volume discounts on our products, so the more you buy, or commit to buy, from us the deeper discount that we offer. We have discount prices at 100 yards (a semi load), 500 yards, 1000, 2000, 5000 and larger.
Many of our landscape contractor customers purchase from a local nursery that carries our products to save on time, freight charges and for convenience. For a nursery near you please call or email us. Contact information is available here.
Question: How much can a pickup truck hold?
Answer:If you had, for example, a Nissan Titan pickup truck, then we would hold about 1.5 to 2 cubic yards in the bed of this truck. If you had a full size pickup with a standard bed then it would hold about 3 yards.
Question: How many yards of bulk material do I need for my project?
Answer: Consult our product calculator link found on the left side of this page for ground cover calculations. For playground chips it is suggested that you place 6+ inches of playground chips. For our soil amendments the amounts vary. Some amend their garden or flower bed soils with our products in a 1:1 mixture. Some professional growers grow directly in our conditioner mediums (e.g. our Fine Soil Conditioner which is a 1/8"-minus bark humus).
Question: Do you deliver?
Answer: Bulk deliveries are by semi (100+ yards per truck; depending on the product), delivery truck (20-30 yards depending on product; minimum order size may apply) or customers can come and pick up in trailers or trucks from our production plant. Super-sacks and smaller bags are on a case-by-case basis. For delivered products, delivery charges will apply depending on location.
