Here at Wolf Mountain, we have over 30 years of experience growing plants of all varieties in horticultural, golf and agricultural settings. We understand agronomy and the application of a variety of soil techniques to enhance plant production. This knowledge, combined with the rare qualities found in our soil enhancemnt products gives growers an edge in bringing out the best in the growing project.
Thirty years ago, Kaibab Industries owned several lumber mills in south central Utah. At about that time, they were advised by the Environmental Protection Agency to stop burning their mill operations tailings (bark), as was the custom. Kaibab purchased a large plot (160 acres) of land, near Panguitch, Utah in which to bury their bark. Additionally, a large "wash" further south was filled in with bark and bark fines.
In Panguitch, trenches were dug approximately 20 feet wide and 15 feet deep, and for the next 15 years, these trenches were filled with bark and then covered with up to five feet of dirt. At the other location, a large wash was filled with the bark and then dirt was placed on top to cap it, as well. Today, most of this bark has been buried for over 20 years and since it has been out of the sun and elements, had no access to water or oxygen, the bark went through a natural decomposing process and is now dry and preserved. Several years ago, Wolf Mountain acquired all this bark material, including the land in Panguitch. It has now become a substrate for various landscape and grow mix products. It now has very high water retention properties, a low pH (acidic), which makes it ideal for our alkaline Western soils, and is in such a state so as to not "steal" nitrogen during a breakdown process, as it already has broken down, unlike a newer bark based soil amendment.
It is a great product and forms the basis for many products that you probably buy already. We ship this product to various large landscape bag product vendors where this bark forms a large percentage of the mixes.
